Outline of Investigation UL Subject 2264 A

Water Electrolysis Type Hydrogen Generators

 

1.1 This Outline covers safety requirements for hydrogen generators that electrolyze water to produce hydrogen. The generators covered by the scope of this Outline use an ion transport medium that consists of one of the following:

  1. a) Aqueous base solutions;
  2. b) Aqueous acid solutions;
  3. c) Solid polymeric materials with acidic function group additions, such as acid proton exchange membrane (PEM); or
  4. d) Solid polymeric materials with basic function group additions, such as anion exchange membrane (AEM).

1.2 The hydrogen generators shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, and NFPA 2, Hydrogen Code.

1.3 Hydrogen generators that can also be used to generate electricity, such as reversible fuel cells, are excluded from the scope of this Outline.

1.4 Residential hydrogen generators that also supply oxygen as a product are excluded from the scope of this Outline.

1.5 This Outline does not cover hydrogen generators intended for installation in classified locations.

Hydrogen Generators Using Water Reaction
  

Scope

  1. This outline covers packaged, self-contained or factory matched packages of integrated gaseous hydrogen generating systems, herein after referred to as hydrogen generators.
  2. This outline covers water reaction-type gaseous hydrogen generators, for example, sodium borohydride and sodium hydride.
  3. This outline applies to hydrogen generators intended for indoor and outdoor, commercial, industrial and residential use, but not to hydrogen generators intended for vehicular-based propulsion.
  4. These requirements do not cover hydrogen generators that can also be used to generate electricity.
  5. This outline does not apply to hydrogen generators rated above 600 V.

Portable Water Electrolysis Type Hydrogen Generators
   

Scope

1. This outline covers portable water electrolysis type gaseous hydrogen generators and component water electrolysis type gaseous hydrogen generators for use in portable equipment.

2. This outline applies to hydrogen generators rated 250 V maximum that are for installation in products intended for indoor and outdoor residential and commercial use.

3. This outline also covers portable hydrogen generators used for refueling of hydrogen absorbing metal alloy fuel cartridges, which are limited in size to a maximum of 100 g of hydrogen storage and a maximum volumetric capacity of 1 L, and which comply with Annex B of IEC 62282-6-100.

4. These products are not intended for use in classified locations.

5. The generators covered by this standard do not include hydrogen storage pressure vessels.
